From Minefields to Ricefields

A story of hope in Cambodia 20 years after the anti-landmine treaty

In 1992, I photographed Tith Pao just after his foot was blown off by a landmine (I accompanied him from the district to the hospital in the World Vision Landcruiser). He lived in one of the most heavily mined areas in the world. His story appeared in a book I co-authored with Paul Davies called War of the Mines in 1994.

Exactly 25 years later, I returned to the area to visit Pao. I found the district completely transformed, almost entirely free of landmines. Life for Pao, and his young family, had improved beyond measure. The month I visited Pao and his family (December 2017) marked 20 years since the Ban Mine Treaty came into effect.
