Peacewalkers
The first peace walk or Dhamma Yietra was organised by 'The Ghandi of Cambodia', the Venerable Maha Ghosananda (left). He was nominated for the Nobel peace prize a number of times for his tireless efforts to bring peace to his homeland. For decades Cambodia had suffered civil war, invasion, genocide, intense bombing by the US and isolation.
In1996, photographer Olivier Pin-Fat and I decided to photograph the walk. The organisers said the walk received little or no coverage by the media. The first night we bedded down with the walkers at a temple in Maha Ghosananda's home province of Takeo. That night all our camera gear was stolen. These were the only pics I have of that first and only day. It was a moving story which didn't get the attention it deserved.
Maha Ghosananda died in 2007 but the walks continue.
